First Bites: Iron-Rich Rice Cereal
A simple and gentle way to introduce solids, this iron-fortified rice cereal mixed with breast milk or formula is easy to digest and packed with essential nutrients for your baby's growth.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon iron-fortified rice baby cereal
- 3-5 tablespoons breast milk or infant formula (adjust to consistency)
Instructions
Gather your supplies: a clean baby bowl, a small spoon, rice cereal, and breast milk or formula.
Pour 1 tablespoon of iron-fortified rice baby cereal into the clean bowl.
Begin adding breast milk or formula, starting with 3 tablespoons.
Stir continuously with the spoon to combine the cereal and liquid.
Check the consistency. It should be very thin and smooth, almost liquidy.
If the mixture is too thick, add more breast milk or formula, a tablespoon at a time, until you reach the desired consistency.
Continue stirring until there are no lumps and the cereal is fully dissolved.
If desired, warm the mixture slightly by placing the bowl in a larger bowl of warm water for a few minutes. Do not microwave.
Always test the temperature on your wrist before feeding to ensure it is lukewarm, not hot.
Offer your baby 1-2 teaspoons of the cereal on a soft-tipped spoon.
Talk to your baby encouragingly and make positive sounds like "Mmm, yummy!"
Go slowly and allow your baby to swallow each spoonful before offering more.
If your baby pushes the cereal out with their tongue, this is normal. Try again another day.
Discard any leftover cereal after feeding to prevent bacterial contamination.
Safety Notes
- Adult supervision is required during feeding.
- Always test the temperature of the cereal before feeding.
- Do not add honey or other sweeteners to the cereal.
- Never leave a baby unattended while eating.
- Do not put cereal in a bottle as it can be a choking hazard and promote overeating.
- Consult your pediatrician before introducing solid foods.
