Cinnamon French Toast Fingers
Soft and easy-to-gum French toast sticks flavored with cinnamon, perfect for little hands and tummies. A nutritious and delicious breakfast or snack!
Ingredients
- 1 slice soft whole grain bread (low sodium, no seeds)
- 1 egg yolk (or 1 small whole egg)
- 2 tablespoons breast milk, formula, or whole milk
- ⅛ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon butter or oil
Instructions
Prep the Bread: If the bread has a crust, trim the very edges to make it softer for baby. This prevents choking hazards.
Cut into Strips: Cut the bread slice into approximately 4 finger-width strips. These are easy for baby to hold.
Prepare the Custard: In a shallow bowl, whisk together the egg yolk (or whole egg) and milk until well combined.
Add Cinnamon: Add the ground cinnamon to the egg mixture and whisk until evenly distributed. This adds flavor without sugar.
Soak the Bread: Dip each bread strip into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are coated. Let soak for 15-30 seconds per side until saturated, but still holding its shape. Be gentle!
Heat the Pan: Heat a non-stick pan over medium-low heat. Add the butter or oil and let it melt and coat the pan.
Cook the Sticks: Place the soaked bread strips in the heated pan, ensuring they are not overcrowded.
Cook First Side: Cook for approximately 2 minutes on the first side, or until golden brown.
Flip and Cook Second Side: Gently flip the French toast sticks and cook for another 2 minutes, or until golden brown and the egg is cooked through. Reduce heat if browning too quickly.
Check for Doneness: Ensure the French toast is cooked through but still soft. It should easily squash between your fingers.
Cool Slightly: Remove the French toast sticks from the pan and place them on a plate to cool slightly. Warm, not hot, is best for baby.
Check Temperature: Ensure the sticks are warm and not hot before giving to baby.
Serve and Supervise: Serve the French toast sticks to your baby as finger food. Always supervise your baby while they are eating to prevent choking.
