Happy Tummy Oatmeal with Prune Power
A gentle and delicious way to help your little one's digestion with iron-fortified oatmeal and naturally sweet prune purée.
Ingredients
- 4-5 dried prunes (pitted)
- 1/2 cup water (for soaking/cooking prunes)
- 2 tablespoons baby oatmeal cereal (iron-fortified)
- 1/4-1/3 cup breast milk or formula (or water) for preparing oatmeal
Instructions
Gather Ingredients: Measure out the prunes, water, oatmeal, and breast milk/formula/water. Ensure the prunes are pitted to prevent choking hazards.
Prepare Prunes: Place the pitted prunes in a small saucepan.
Add Water: Pour 1/2 cup of water into the saucepan with the prunes.
Simmer Prunes: Bring the water to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Cook for about 5 minutes, or until the prunes are plump and very soft. Alternatively, soak prunes in hot water for 10 minutes without boiling.
Cool Slightly: Allow the cooked prunes to cool slightly before transferring them to a blender.
Purée Prunes: Transfer the softened prunes and 1-2 tablespoons of the soaking liquid to a small blender or food processor.
Blend Until Smooth: Blend the prunes until they form a smooth, thick purée. If needed, add a little more of the soaking water, one teaspoon at a time, to reach the desired consistency. Alternatively, push softened prunes through a sieve.
Prepare Oatmeal: In a clean baby bowl, measure out 2 tablespoons of dry baby oatmeal cereal.
Add Liquid to Oatmeal: Gradually add warm breast milk, formula, or water to the oatmeal, stirring continuously.
Mix Well: Stir the oatmeal and liquid until it forms a smooth, lump-free mixture. Adjust the amount of liquid to achieve a typical baby cereal consistency that is easy for baby to swallow.
Combine Prune Purée and Oatmeal: Add 1-2 tablespoons of the prepared prune purée to the oatmeal. Start with 1 tablespoon and add more to taste and for desired consistency.
Mix Thoroughly: Stir the prune purée and oatmeal together until they are well combined and the oatmeal is a light brown color.
Check Temperature: Before serving, check the temperature of the oatmeal to ensure it is not too hot for the baby. Allow it to cool slightly if necessary.
Serve and Enjoy: Feed your baby the Happy Tummy Oatmeal with Prune Power. Store any leftover prune purée in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for longer storage.
